Google once said that they want their Glass to be hacked so that developers can unlock the true potential of the next generation of wearable technology. At this year’s I/O conference, Google also held a session titled “Voiding Your Warranty” where Googlers rooted the Glass and installed Ubuntu as an alternative operating system.
Now Google has released the Glass’ system image and a rooted bootloader of the latest XE5 update for developers. Developers can download the system image and rooted bootloader, install them on their Glass and go beyond imagination.
However, Google won’t let you do the experiment under their warranty policy. The company clearly states in the download page that rooting, flashing or unlocking Google Glass will void the warranty and stop it from receiving Over-the-Air updates. Google also noted that there’s no guarantee OTA updates will be available even if the factory images are flashed.
Furthermore, Google mentions that rooting, flashing custom image or unlocking the Glass may result the device ending up in an irrecoverable state although we highly doubt something like that will happen with its worldwide developers.
This is not the first time the system image for Google Glass is available. However, this is the first time Google is officially letting developers download the system image and updated rooted bootloader. Google also said that they will be releasing every other update the original Google Glass receives via OTA.
Now this does prove that Google has a positive attitude towards the developers who want to hack into Google Glass and do beyond what Google lets them under its wings.
